So, in the late 1940s-early 1950s, Madame Alexander released a wave of higher quality dolls which made a huge splash in the doll world. The most famous of these releases are known as today as the "Mystery Dolls," 6 dolls in a series without official names which were so well received that the designer won a gold award from the New York Fashion Academy (normally reserved for human designs). The dolls are known as the "Mystery Dolls" and by collector-given nicknames because they were never published in any Madame Alexander catalog and no one knows what, if anything, they were called.
The company is releasing a series inspired by the "Mystery Dolls," combining the modern Alexander Look with fashions inspired by--though sadly not replicas of--the original designs. The quality is nowhere near the 1940s-50s dolls, which were hand-painted and sewed, but it's interesting for collectors at least.
