They never explicitly fight on-screen, but you can tell by their attitudes and the fact that your rival is a cunt; not your helpful best friend like in later games. In the anime they talk about a trainer having to be tough and endure the hardships that their Pokémon do. Pic related is trolling, but without the notes I still think classic Gold looks like a resourceful kid who sleeps in the woods and had to fight his way into the Pokémon league. I'm not trying to be a genwunner - I have played all the later games and loved them. It's just subjectively, I think the older artstyle captured the tone better.
