I cleaned off the battle damage (it strips off surprisingly easy with rubbing alcohol) AND I managed to get him to actually transform!
Before, there were still some issues with clearance so some parts weren't able to fit quite where they needed to for the tank to lay flat but after some trial and error, I got it to work without visibly butchering the whole thing.
