According to Mark, he created the Magic boom. When actually he didn't get into anything creative for WoTC till 2001, which was also during a time of major decline for Magic.
As time passed, he slowly got rid of the old guard (artists, designers, playtesters) and hired his own people who were not TCG players or game designers from just friends or people with agendas.
