lets use star wars as an example in 1999 you could get both darth vader's tie fighter and a y-wing for about $50 which is about $75 today
in 2016 both ships were split up, with the y-wing alone costing $60 and the set that vader's tie came in, which also with another ship, the much smaller a-wing (which released by itself the following year for $22 in today's money), was $90
so if these three (four if you count the 2000 a-wing) you could either pay $97 or $150 for the same three ships, with the biggest difference being the amount of pieces used to build the sets
unless you want to use the parts for mocing, most people would choose the cheaper sets because they're essentially the same as the more expensive ones
