I just always ensure to go SAL or RSAL, and if I'm putting in a bigger order, I'll split it over multiple deliveries. It might cost the same in EMS in shipping, but it has a 0% chance of getting hit by customs.
The first couple of times I asked for it to be marked as gift, and a specified value, and they did. Since then I don't specify and they state it's "toy parts" with a value under 2000 yen.
