Had an experiment at achieving a nice pearl white. Did four white gloss spoons, sprayed two with Alclad Holomatic Spectral Chrome and two with a custom paint mix made from Mr. Color GX Gloss Clear and ground pigment from a super-fine pearlescent white pastel. With each sample one was done with only a few layers whilst the other was done more heavily. Alclad spoons on the left, pastel paint on the right.
The Alclad was good, gave a very nice effect over white. Really has that hologram/rainbow look, which over gloss white really works for that iridescent pearl effect. But I have to say, though it doesn't show up well on my camera, the pastel paint mix worked beautifully. A far more natural, subtle look than the Alclad and also a bit easier to work with. Obviously you don't get the rainbows but it is a lovely pearl white. Also you get so much pigment (they're PanPastels if you want to try it yourself) and you need so little in the thinner-medium-pigment ratio that it's amazingly good value for money.
