The horizontal bars go in front of the vertical ones and are just slotted into place. I could have used 1x6 plates to connect all three together, but I went with 1x2 tiles for style. And it still holds together really well, after everything sits in place you can just pull the bars out of the jumper plates ever so slightly, creating enough pressure to keep everything connected even when upside down.
