>>10837009Im the opposite. Id rather a figure I dont know but like the character design than a character I know but like the character design less for. I dont play a single gacha game and likely never will but my favorite Figmas are the Fate and Kancolle ones.
Most people seem to collect figures and other merch to dedicate themselves further to a particular franchise but personally I dont feel this need to collect something solely because its from a show Ive liked. The figure has to appeal to me on its own merit outside of the show. Im also used to collecting generic no franchise figures so Ive always created my own headcanon for shit.
Losing enjoyment in some figures just inevitably comes from changing tastes over time and this applies to both shows and preferred character designs. I've dramatically lost interest in highschool and most action shounen shows over the years and I also don't care for moeblob designs anymore. I also had this obsessive phase over girls with short hair whereas now I limit this to tomboy characters like picrel only.
>>10836959As long as you really love the character design and are fine with projecting your own head canon or watch and enjoy the show later, I find it a very raw and direct way to enjoy toys. Figma got me into Girls und Panzer and its still one of my favorite seasonal anime all these years later.
That other anon is right about potentially buying stuff you stop caring for later so I keep my fodder purchases cheap to minimize regret, have a clear image of what my ideal figures look like and I do a double take if any hype trains compels me to coonsume merch recklessly.
