While the box clearly indicates they're meant to be the classic Afrika Korps troops, what was actually included is quite different. I would go so far as to say only a single pose bears a strong enough resemblance to a Matchbox original (one of the grenadiers) to suggest a faint connection there.
Going under the assumption that many army men sets started life as 1/72 kits I've scoured plasticsoldierreview for possible source armies and come up pretty much blank; a crawl through toysoldierco met with same results. These guys seem to be fairly OC overall, though I still suspect there's a source army out there somewhere.
