It's more likely that Snoke punishes him for hiding behind the mask and smashes it. He has to earn his respect back (and the mask) by doing whatever he does in TLJ.
He's funky looking but it works with this new outfit, with a helmet he looks like a noble and with it off he looks like a vampire/duelist, and more importantly like Anakin.
