Go to Bricklink and find the piece you want, then look at the sets that it's in. Find the smallest set that it's in and note the number.
Go to Brickset and look up the list of pieces in the set. The top number is Lego's internal number; the bottom number is the one printed on the piece. You want the top number.
Go to
Lego.com and at the bottom, click Missing Parts. Then click Buy Bricks.
Enter the part number you got from Brickset and the part should appear. IF IT SAYS IT'S OUT OF STOCK, IT MAY NOT BE OUT OF STOCK. In this case, you should call Lego's 800 number and ask a rep to look it up. Their system often shows warehoused pieces that don't appear in the online search.
