Welp, this was painful. No idea why the decals wouldn't come off, but even in warm water it usually took a good teo minutes until they were ready. I bought the kit around 6 years ago; it's a 2015 tool Airfix kit. Rhat's not THAT old, is it?
Also, I realized I have no idea how to properly fit decals into panel lines. I have revell decal soft, which I liberally applied and the used a q-tip to push that shit into the panel lines. In the end I broke three decals, of which I managed to fix two, but it didn't look good, so for the big crosses under the wings I simply cut them along the lines, but that left some ugly spots on the cutting edges. Although now I noticed that some decals seem to have adjusted on their own.
Anyway, any advice for the future?
