It's hard to find gems in the technic line because Lego is so cheap and inconsistent with how they include functions. Some sets have genius functions, like the propellor drive in the fire plane, or the tilt steering on the new off road race buggy. Meanwhile the 50 dollar cars don't even have suspension or working differential, and the supercars - while admittedly complex and beautiful - are grossly oversized, under functioned, and unplayable. The worst of it all is the technic team is no longer offering B models for anything. It's an entire change in philosophy.
Despite that some stuff is still great. 42164 off-road race buggy fits suspension and a great tilt-steering function in a very small design. It just retired but 42139 All-terrain vehicle is also great. 6x4 drivetrain with a gearbox, suspension on all axles, tilting bed, and a very well hidden winch. It was pretty cheap before Lego did their big price adjustment and kicked it up to 90 dollars. Both of them are pretty easy to modify. I added a PTO and a bunch of bullshit to my atv, and working on filling out the body shape on the buggy.
Speaking of price adjustment look at 42128 heavy duty tow truck and 42144 material handler. Ten dollar difference and the material handler is less than half the set the tow truck is. What the fuck.
