I do prefer bare plastic to paint when it comes to large sections of a toy. Take the MMC Not-Predacons for example, or TFC's Not-Seacons. They're mostly bare plastic, and they look damn nice. They have paint where it is appropriate: Detailings, some swaths that couldn't be solid plastic all the way through, etc.
In Brainstorm's case it's certainly odd the way he was painted, most of him could've easily been plastic cast in the right colors.
