Is Inventions a glimpse at Mega's future direction? A focus on creative play with less emphasis placed on licensed properties, bags instead of boxes (to take up less space, get more units on shelves), and a conspicuous absence of minifigures? I don't think it would necessarily be a terrible move on Mega's part. Heavy reliance on licensed IPs (Halo, in particular) probably got them through some rough patches in the past, but diminishing returns and the failure of TRU probably has them reconsidering whether or not it's worth paying those licensing fees (not to mention being at the mercy of licensors' stringent demands).
Building brand recognition is something Mega has not done well in recent years. The truth is that all those licensed themes probably didn't do much to elevate Mega's brand as the average consumer probably didn't even bother looking beyond the license to see who designed the set. Hang onto Halo, but maybe rethink those other licensing agreements if all we're going to ever get is a Kubro and/or a single collectible minifigure. If Mega is to continue, then it needs to develop more original themes.
