Lego has "morality" on its side.
people recognize the other companies are ripping-off their bricks. blatantly. and it's different than screws and screwdrivers (the argument that lets rip-off companies copy Lego is basically you can't patent a measurement, but you can copyright a minifigure design, which is why the rip-off can't do them exactly)
it's human nature to protect things being attacked, as you would want to be protected yourself, if you were attacked. even though it's a corporation and money being attacked, people are inclined to defend it, unaware of the motivations.
to sum-up, people look at a rip-off set and think "what a dick move, I'm not supporting that. let's go buy a real Lego."
