in the late 60's through the 70's and 80's there was a movement away from "home made" and "original" costumes. (we aren't talking witches and ghosts... they will be with us forever.)
And what better way to tell someone you were Frankenstein's monster than to wear a monster mask and have a picture of the monster on your chest?
This idea existed in the past but I don't think it was ever as prevalent and thankfully it's only a low percentage today.
