>>5792058The actual maintenance/caring part isn't even that big.
Don't put them into the sun, no oil stuff, don't do anything with them you wouldn't do with a laptop or smartphone either.
It's the customizing part, no doubt.
On top of that they are not mass-made and you have a shitton of different companies to choose from who all make the same kind of product.
Don't like a certain look?
Buy from a different company, still get a BJD.
The only other dolls that come pretty much bare and need to be customized are Reborns, all other dolls are "forced" into their custom state.
Like Blythe, Monster High and the like.
Groove now made the step with Pullip to easier customs with their MIO kits, but they started out as finished dolls too.
Pullips are probably community-wise still the closest.
BJDs however are supposed to be customized.
You can always buy them blank, clothes and all the other stuff are usually not included.
Default and full-sets aren't really interesting to most BJD owners.
It's probably the only doll community in which customs are rarely bought.
Yes, people send out their dolls to be painted by others, but they buy the service and let their doll painted the way they want it to.
In most other doll communities you have a couple customizer and a shitload of people who just buy finished customs to put into their cabinets or buy the factory finished dolls.
Honestly, tried so many different dolls but BJDs are still my fav.
You can do so much neat stuff with them, you have lots of options, there are a crazy amount of creative customizers...makes me forget how much the community sometimes sucks and how much has changed due to the whole recast bullshit.
