Whenever I 'fix' sets I strive to keep them as close to their original shape as possible and to keep them looking like official Lego products. This 'marionette' mechanism is really cool, so I didn't want to get rid of it.
The problem with the back, to my mind, was not how bare it was but how much the mechanism 'popped', being made from light grey pieces. I replaced most of them with black ones, then made the tail bones Trans. Light Blue to draw more attention there.
