As a generation Xer, you forget that the 90s was still full of syndicated shows that would allow most early Generation Y-ers to experience what previous generations experienced or understand previous generations. Stuff like Growing Paints and Leave it to Beaver would be on TV at 5:30 and 5:00pm.
Kids didn't really use the internet back then to fill in time by watching youtube shit, so there was no self-imposed filter like today.
So if kids wanted to be entertained by TV, they turned to TV to watch The Dick Van Dyke show, I Love Lucy, My Secret Identity, Popeye, Woody Wood Peaker, and Newhart
