It only took modifying the ratchet joints in the legs, tightening a bunch of other joints with superglue (and lots of time and focus to keep the joints from gluing solid), modifying the sword to fit in a 5mm port, and carefully posing him until everything was balanced just right... but I'm finally able to display Abominus. The bath mat I'll replace with a non-slip black rubber mat, but that's a shopping trip for another day.
I really wanted a Decepticon combiner but I want to keep everything in display Cybertronian. (I really like Siege.) The Terrorcons struck me as being planet-agnostic as far as their alt forms go and I was able to snag them and the upgrade kit for a good price on eBay.
I'm guessing most CW/PotP combiners use similar ratchet joints for the legs. They're surprisingly easy to strengthen, I'll post some pics.
