If the chains actually had hollow parts in every single 'link' the tooling could would be astronomical. I don't think it's even realistically possible to make a solid chain with every single link having a hollow portion without making them all separate pieces that have to be assembles together one by one in the factory, but then you have a floppy chain.
One work around is to have every other chain link have a true hole through it (like pic) which would be possible depending on the shape and orientation of the chain, but I'm sure most of you would complain at that too so there's no winning.
