Than something happened which caused them to lose faith that these designer dolls would be profitable so they made some major cut backs. One very obvious cut back which everyone noticed was the elimination of merch to go with this years line. Pin collectors are now stuck with an incomplete set of designer dolls pins. I also believe in my heart that there was a fifth set which got cut out of the line up. Probably Jafar/Jasmine or Tina/Doctor Facilier. Last year we had five Hero Vs Villain doll sets, and this year they cut it down to only four.
This would also explain why Aurora's dress is so plain. Since the decision to add the lase detail took place early on in the dolls development they probably found themselves having to make some cut backs to the doll once the original budget was cut . They found themselves having to remove embroidery details to lower the cost of the set.
This is all speculation of course, but all signs indicate that some where down the road they lost faith in this years line, and that some cuts ( like the merch) were made.
