I built my n-scale on a wall shelf. Since it can't run in a loop, there's magnets glued to the undersides of the train ends, and hall effect sensors under the tracks so the train knows where to slow down and where to stop. It runs on the 15 minutes so it acts like a 'productivity' reminder of how time is passing during my day.
I guess I could have put a DCC adapter in the train, but it started out as just an idea for a shuttle to be run with latching relays, and it grew into a full microcontroller project.
It's a Kato station and a Yamanote n-scale 4-car set. The train is lit with 6500k LEDs from HKTILC, they're way better than what Kato themselves sells.
