I've used this example before, but Icer is a prime example. The cartoon version would not make a good toy at all(though I do wish he had an alt head with that shit eating grin he had) but the general idea is good and Classics proved you could take that design and make cool figure out of it.
Compare that to Sunder, Lizard Man and Kittrina where they were totally faithful with no liberties taken, and they all sucked as toys.
