https://www.encyclopedia.com/media/encyclopedias-almanacs-transcripts-and-maps/leisure-timeAdults rarely use their imaginations, and for a lot of kids through the ages, they mainly saw their parents doing actual work or knowing what their parents did before coming home just to eat, shit and bang their mom.
Through most of the 1900s, parents mostly did sedentary shit after work, and as it became available, listened to the radio and watched TV. Fictional books are a relatively recent past time, at least for the masses. A lot of what people did with their leisure time was being social, mostly with their families.
Later on, people got more free time to actually do stuff like play sports. Or build models. Or spend a huge whopping amount of time watching a full length movie. As technology improved and their markets grew, we've been able to miniaturize all those past times to make them private enjoyed at home. Which meant even less socializing and more sedentary lifestyles.
ANYWAY, this applied to kids too. There's more shit for kids to do today than they used to with consumer goods. Even with media, we went from having a few hours of kids media aimed at kids per week, to a few hours everyday, to entire channels dedicated to their media. Now there's media that's aimed SOLELY at their very specific interests that they can watch/play at any second they want, even when outside or in the car. And depending on how lazy they are, they may choose to only WATCH instead of playing, because actively using their brains saps them of their strength. The brain requires a disproportionate amount of calories everyday to work, so of course its tiring to do something vs just to watch.
In short, sedentary shit has always existed and the main way to pass the time since forever. Active pastime is hipster retroshit or conservatives remembering the good ol' days.
