You want to use a finer brush, preferably a fan brush, and not only to fanning strokes, but also slightly oval strokes with the length of the brush to make knots in the wood, too.
I'm in a really bad lightning place and the cleaning solution I used to remove dust reacted with the clear coat, lol. But here is a photo of my 1/32nd albatross woodgrain done with oils.
