Take that away, and you are just left with an expensive looking fancy doll. You want them to look as close to the characters as you remember them in your own mind. When you start using dress variants rather than their iconic dresses they start looking less like the iconic image of the character they are trying to represent.
I'll give you a perfect example. If you were to be honest with yourself would you rather have the original LE Elsa in her iconic Let it Go blue dress or the one in this image?
Heck, as nice as the Frozen Fever dresses were I beat if most fans could only ad one of the two dolls to their collections they would chose the blue dress Elsa over the Frozen Fever dress Elsa. Most people who don't have the first LE Elsa doll just settled for the Frozen Fever LE doll since they couldn't afford the original LE Elsa doll.
Another quick example. If you could only own one LE Rapunzel doll in your collection would you rather have the one with the long blonde hair and purple dress or the variant one in the wedding dress with short brown hair?
