Nobody denied that Classics Rodimus was shit and was about as complex as the newer one and the moment LG Rodimus came out everyone ditched that figure. If you're talking about 2015 then shit absolutely got worse around Prime Wars. Molds felt incredibly light, cheap and flimsy and severely lacked alot of the paint, details and articulation that made older figures stand out and made them actually fun.
There's a sweet spot that many of the 2007-2010 figures hit perfectly. They were fun to mess with as puzzles (things like difficulty level on the boxes gave people a good idea of how complex the transformation is) but the conversion (in most cases) wasn't shit you could just do in 5 seconds like with Prime Wars but also not ridiculously time consuming and tiring that it makes the figure less fun (unless it's the Twins or ROTF Mixmaster). MP's were sort of a product of that time and even the Takara designers admit this but now its just complexity for complexity's sake
