The right of publicity is a state law-based right in the united states and the Celebrities Rights Act in California in extended the personality rights for a celebrity to 70 years after their death even if waved. They have to get permission from someone to go forward with this. Also you can't "sign away" your likeness forever, whatever was written and agree to was under a different company that sold all this which means agreements are not certain to stay in place. Lawsuits occur all the time over this, one just happen not too long ago to NECA over nightmare on elm street and Friday the 13th, they had the rights they had the papers sign but one lawsuit over the rights put full stop on merchandises even though these parties have paid agreements giving them full control.
