That, and the christian iconography looks cooler. (as opposed to being literally not able to have imagery at all with islam.) On top of that, western culture is so ingrained with christian metaphors in the way we speak and categorise things that using that iconography is almost second nature to us
This probably the most firstworld problem ever, but i remember being so bored with the way military was portrayed in popculture when Iraq invaded. It was a similar thing for me, beige is just a thrash colour compared to the army greens. I prefer and use that depiction even though not every relevant army now looks like that anymore. Much like the save icon is still a floppy disk. These things became icons, shorthand to convey a message.
