In gengeral, maybe if a card or box is good looking, I will leave it in. Usually I do carefully cut it out so I can put it back in. Even as an older kid and teen, I would use an X-acto blade to carefully cut figures off the card in case I wanted to put them back in.
If I buy older figures unopened now, I certainly try to leave them in unless I have a spot for them. Even then I'll carefully cut it out so I can redisplay it in package.
