There was an attempt with micromachines and the Japanese line had a few. It hink the problem is in the 90s Transformers was in such a bad place after the late G1 line and G2 did so poorly there just wasn't that much space that retailers would set aside for it. Playsets in general were also dying by the late 90s anyway. Which is a shame since the basic figures were sized about equal to GI Joe/Star wars and even the Kenner batman stuff so they could've reused parts and tooling to kitbash something if they chose and include a basic with it; thats why Takara did the BW II playsets; they had extra ones from a microman reboot that went bust.

In engineering, sure, but the actual aesthetics aren't that different. Takara's influence is especially evident in how Microman-esque the Transmetals are. Even the basics blend in well with Microman stuff. Takara had a history of using Microman accessories for BW era basics, from Niagara base and tako tank to Robot Masters.
