To begin with, it's not a function of a primer to cover the plastic's color with some basic color like gray, white or black. The function of a primer is to adhere to the surface so that the paint can in turn adhere to it. Finisher's primer, Gaia multiprimer, HobbyMio primer, Tamiya metal primer (and others I forgot to list) are clear liquids which cover nothing, but they are still proper primers because they adhere to the surface.
Covering the plastic color is a function of high pigment density paint (which some primers happen to be), but if a primer is your only high-density pigment you should really look at changing your paint brand.
