If you had, say, a "shoulder" piece that made up the gearbox that you placed 3 times onto the hips/connected together instead of the one giant torso piece it might have been easier to make such modifications. For the benefit of us here in the future, I also would have made the shoulder connections be a unique ball joint that fits under the metru shoulder armor for some extra articulation :)
