Shaman King's fights were always straight forward while the plot was more complicated and unorthodox to the point people bailed out of it when because its hippy protagonist decided to redeem Hao rather than drilling the heavens with Amidamaru.
JoJo's plots have twists and turns but their goals remain untouched. Even SBR was about Johnny winning a race and healing his legs until the end.
Shaman King went from Yoh being pussy-whipped into becoming the shaman king to Yoh planning to destroy everything and then kill Hao in his sleep after quitting the tournament to Yoh resolving to save Hao because becoming powerful wouldn't be comfy.
