As a cartoon studio they have more than a decade of experience designing transforming+combining robots, but the toys are all engineered by the toy manufacturer that contracted them.
You can check their portfolio, they made that infamous Astroplan show and three Transformers/Brave ripoff cartoons

You could already see some of the problems you mentioned back in this line, though it's a little unfair since they didn't produce those toys.
