The other problem is that the engine brick is slightly shorter than four System studs on one axis. This is because there are molded engine components on the front and back sides that stick out from the surface, and the piece needs to be able to slot flush against Duplo bricks on all sides, so the walls are slightly closer together than a brick that's smooth on all sides, so that the total depth of the piece is the same as a standard brick.
