He thinks the past is some strange alternate reality and can't differentiate between two distinct characters despite them looking different and having different names. This book is widely considered to be a masterpiece and Chris Ware one of, if not the greatest cartoonist working today. Everyone should read it, especially anyone who has even a passing interest in scifi, capeshit, or collector culture.
