Most of the time it's to print out a gift receipt. Sometimes the talkative friendly cashier is just nosy. Sometimes they will automatically print out two receipts. One for me, and an extra gift recite so that I can give it to the little girl the cashier assumed I was buying the doll for without even asking.
Here's a true yet fucked story about how I ended up getting pressured into buying a non-returnable $40 doll by both the cashier and multiple people waiting in line.
>Walk into store after Christmas >They have a 50% toy section near the register>Pick up a $60 doll, and ask if it's also part of the 50% off sale>Cashier says yes while asking if it's for me or for someone else>There's a line of like four people who are now looking at me holding the doll>I say it's for my little cousin >Some old Grandma waiting in line says out loud "Oh You're going to make some little girl so happy with that">I say I'm not sure if I'm going to get it because it's still $30>Black guy in line says out loud "Come on Be a hero, and make her happy">The fucking cashier says "Just do it. Just do it." while smiling>I get in line to buy the fucking doll>They are all happy I'm doing itTwo months later I find the same fucking doll I payed $30 for at the thrift store for $5.
You can assume most people don't care, but I guess that all depends where you live, and what type of people you live with. Where I live everyone cares about everything.
