Yeah, I got into LEGO as a kid in the late 90s, early 00s. This was the tail end of their original lines (the Rock Raiders, the Insectors, the Mission to Mars line, the Oceanauts, the castle line where Cedric the Bull was the villain) and the dawn of their Bionicle stuff and the franchise lines (Star Wars and Harry Potter).
On the one hand, LEGO's survival is entirely thanks to the franchises existing. Harry Potter and Star Wars took LEGO out of life support and opened the door to it making toys about everything. On the other hand, I really do miss seeing imaginative lines where you make your own rules and it's not about seeing Tony "Robert Downey Jr" Stark's face *again*.
Also, anyone else remember the LEGO Galidor line? I remember the more-expensive toys in the line were electronic and could "react" to the show (basically, they were sensitive to certain signals from the audio/visuals). I remember thinking to myself as a young'n, "That's a dumb gimmick. What happens if the show gets cancelled or it ends?"
