The thing that always interested me about the Headmasters was the plot direction (retcon) that Furman did with Marvel G1. Instead of being an organic puppeteering a robo-corpse (the original intent) Furman made it into symbiosis, but it had a catch.
The two minds could fight and bicker with each other in their “astral realm” and in some cases one mind would pretty much absorb the other. Scorponok was overpowered by Zarak’s mind and pretty much became an extension of the Nebulan’s mind and while they aren’t Headmasters Optimus had a similar situation where his personality overpowered Hi-Q.
Fort Max and Spike were actively fighting each other and I can only imagine the situations faced by the more “eccentric” duos.
