The west took a huge step backwards with the tama-go and friends models, but that was a long time ago now. It's not impossible for western releases to have good features.
There are clear gimmicks but the've also made noteworthy improvements. The Meets was laggy as fuck and could barely keep up with traditional 2fps motion; but like you can see in webm related the pix maintains a high framerate during regular character animation which has been done by competitors for years but a color tamagotchi has never pulled it off before.
It would be weird for america to accomplish that on their own without any input from japan, so I'd like to believe japan has their own new anniversary device in the works that just hasn't been announced yet. Japan normally does new releases around november so there's still a few months before it'd be normal for it to be announced
