Even by what these statue implies by his sculpt shows that Darkseid is some power hungry villain that doesn't get his hands dirty. They understood the character.
Even when Darkseid used a weapon in the comics, it was almost always a gun. The only time he really does melee is when he's up against sound barrier breaking fast characters like Superman and Wonder Woman, so having some long range weapon (even a spear or sword) is cumbersome/useless.
