On top of all this, VHS quality and degradation did lead to people watching the movie and seeing Hot Rod's colors "shifted" to a more red tone.
As for a long time we had the divide of "Hasbro matches toy, Takara matches toon" so there's been just about as many red Hot Rods as there are magenta.
