yeah, they're meant to be read, but your books will last longer and produce less dust everytime you take them out to read with a proper bookcase.
If you're going to share the shelves and want them to look better for display, drape something over the books. Also helps from gathering dust too.
I've been looking into somethings like this (green parts), which can be rolled up like toilet paper and stores ontop of the books. Only costs $30 too, but the problem is getting the right image and backdrop places don't sell suitable designs.
I've done something similar with legos as a background diorama to place figures in front of. Tried to get a Castlevania 2d background look, but it was too glossy. Building them in sections helped in getting to the books in back of the background.
Also tried mousepads, but they're too short and heavy.
