The Rebuild movies started with the premise of being a sort of reimagining of the series with a new ending, but ever since the first movie in 2007 people kept noticing certain hints and details that would make it seem as if this was an actual sequel to NGE/EoE and not a remake/reboot.
The final movie finally released this year and while a lot of it is still ambiguous and up to interpretation, there were some heavy connections to the original series as well, thus making it seem like this new set of movies isn't just a simple remake, which they certainly aren't.
But yeah end of the world imagery is a big part of the movies. By the 3rd movie the whole world is completely fucked and only a minimum amount of humans are able to survive thanks to technology.
