Michelangelo's arm position could mimic different nunchaku stances as well as monkey-style kung-fu poses without the chucks equipped. Donatello's arm articulation could set up multiple bo-staff stances, and without the weapon he could take defensive karate positions. Raphael was in a horse stance and his arms were designed to look good holding the sais in either direction, upright or blade down. Leo could get good swords akimbo poses or tight and blocking.
They were simple and had limited articulation but you could still get a lot out of them.
