I forget what 80s/90s comic this happened in, but there was a villain who was bombing buildings. The damage he created mostly blew off the facades of the buildings, leaving behind the OLD gothic architecture that was left somehow intact despite not making any sense.
It's a fucking retarded retcon, but hey, it's fun?
